Founded in 1975 by Murray McPhail, LeaderBrand is one of New Zealand’s most recognised and diverse horticultural businesses.

LeaderBrand at a Glance

LeaderBrand has farms located in Gisborne and Canterbury, growing approximately 3,500ha of fresh produce each year for process, domestic and international customers.
We employ 200 permanent staff, with an additional 300 seasonal staff through the summer harvest period.

  1. Established grower, packer and exporter of Buttercup Squash (Kabocha).
  2. Leading grower, packer and shipper of Broccoli, Lettuce and fresh Sweet Corn for the New Zealand market.
  3. Owner of one of New Zealand's most modern salad production facilities.
  4. One of the largest Gisborne growers of internationally acclaimed Chardonnay and Pinot Gris grapes.
  5. A key supplier of process crops such as Tomatoes, Sweet Corn and Pumpkins.


LeaderBrand South Island

LeaderBrand has an established farm in Ashburton on the Canterbury Plains. The region is known for having an excellent reputation for agricultural production, a temperate climate and good water supply creating ideal conditions for the production of a broad range of crops.


Summer temperatures reach as high as 35 °C with an average summer temperature of 25°C. Night temperatures fall to between 12-15 °C.   Winter extremes with overnight lows down to -5 °C and up to 14 °C in the daytime.

Summer grown Crops are undertaken from mid December to mid February and harvested throughout March and April. Crops Grown by LeaderBrand include Buttercup Squash and Broccoli.
